As a bodybuilder, the key to maintaining a lean physique, is not just about your testosterone level, it is about estrogen as well. Estrogen is important in your quest for muscularity, good health and energy, as all hormones are all complexly interconnected.
Effects of Excess Estrogen
Hormone production is an interconnected pyramid with 40 different types of estrogen metabolites. Men should have estrogen metabolite levels monitored to avoid baldness, prostate cancer and obesity. Too much of some estrogens may cause mood changes, hair thinning, and feminising problems in men. Too much of specific estrogens in your blood and tissue cause fat gains, loss of muscle and the reduction of sexual performance and drive. Men under physical and emotional/mental stress, and older men, suffer from decreasing testosterone and relatively high estrogen, which decreases the benefits of testosterone.
Alcohol’s Effect on Estrogen
Alcohol inhibits your body’s ability to clear estrogen from the blood stream, by depressing the central system and by decreasing zinc.
Cholesterol & Hormones
All sexual and adrenal hormones can be made directly from cholesterol. Even without eating foods with cholesterol, you always have enough in your body for hormone production. Your body needs only a small amount of cholesterol to make the master hormone - pregnenolone. Pregnenolone can be catalysed to numerous other body hormones.
- DIM (Diindolyl Methane or Diindolylmethane) is found in cruciferous vegetables and supports the activity of enzymes that improve estrogen metabolism. DIM promotes healthy testosterone levels and healthy estrogen metabolism. The use of DIM fosters an environment of muscle building and fat reduction. It is often used on bodybuilding supplements such as Tribulus and Protein Powders.
- Chrysin (Passiflora Coerulea) is used with many testosterone boosters. Chrysin is extracted from the Passiflora coerulea (Passion Flower) plant. To promote muscle growth, increased testosterone and lower estrogen levels are advantageous. Chrysin is beneficial as it inhibits the conversion of testosterone to estrogen.
- Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound found in grapes and red wine that has anti-estrogenic properties. Resveratrol is popular amongst bodybuilders for its anti-estrogenic qualities. Resveratrol inhibits estrogen’s potential for adding body fat. Resveratrol can be taken on its own or with testosterone supplements such as Tribulus.
Bodybuilding Supplements For Hormone Management
For the bodybuilder, managing your key hormones, including estrogen, is important in not only maintaining a great physique, but also for optimal health. As part of your hormonal management, be wary of excess estrogens as they can cause side effects such as wasting away your hard earned muscle through the catabolic effects of estrogen, or gynecomastia (bitch tits). On a health level, it can cause cancer of the breast and prostate. When training or taking supplements to increase testosterone, the body may produce extra estrogen. Using a supplement including DIM, Chrysin or Resveratrol can keep your estrogen levels in check, enabling you to optimise the benefits of your bodybuilding training.
