Hydrolysed whey is the absolute epitome of protein technology. As an ingredient, it boasts unrivalled absorption speed, and unique anabolic properties that other protein powders cannot match. As such, you would expect industry giants Optimum Nutrition to make a killer hydrolysed whey in the form of Platinum Hydro Whey. However, those in the industry know that BNRG Proto Whey is a quiet achiever that is often underrated. So how does this underdog compare to one of the top selling hydrolysed whey protein powders on the market?

Hydro Whey vs Proto Whey Ingredients

Both products have hydrolysed whey protein as their sole source of protein. However, other than this, the two products share little in common. Proto Whey contains what is probably the world’s most hydrolysed whey protein, which contains up to 40% di- and tri-peptides. It also contains some glutamine, but the rest of the ingredients are really for flavouring purposes.

Hydro Whey uses hydrolysed whey with an unknown amount of hydrolysis, but contains added BCAAs, digestive enzymes, and nonactive flavouring agents. Although digestive enzymes are sometimes a nice touch, in the case of hydrolysed whey, they are somewhat redundant unless the level of hydrolysis is low.

Winner: BNRG Proto Whey – Considering its contains around 40% di- and tri- peptides (which is really what hydrolysed whey proteins are all about), Proto Whey wins this category hands down.

Although both products are of similar serving sizes, Hydro Whey provides significantly more protein per serve. In fact, it contains around 77% protein versus the 59% for the Proto Whey, which is relatively low due to the large amounts of flavouring agents.

Winner: Optimum Hydro Whey

Hydro Whey Vs Protein Whey Effectiveness

Hydolysed whey is all about recovery. Although both products are hydrolysed whey protein powders, the difference in effectiveness between the two products is actually enough to notice. Do not let the lower protein content of Proto Whey fool you, because it is actually one of the world’s most potent and bioavailable whey proteins. Again, we stress the fact that it is 40% di- and tri-peptides, which is almost unrivalled. This means less of the product is needed to exert noticeable improvements in recovery.

Winner: BNRG Proto Whey

Hydro Whey Vs Protein Whey Taste & Mixability

Both products mix well, though it must be said that Hydro Whey is a finer powder, mixes slightly better, and with less effort than the Proto Whey. However, when it comes down to taste, there is really no comparison. Proto Whey, in this reviewer's opinion, is one of the world's best tasting protein powders full stop. Yes, it is slightly bitter (from the hydrolysed whey), but it complements the flavour of the product perfectly. For example, double chocolate is well textured, rich, and tastes like a high quality dark chocolate, and not at all like a protein powder.

Winner: BNRG Proto Whey

Hydro Whey Vs Protein Whey Price & Value

If you are looking to get these products in bulk, you would be out of luck, because neither come in large bags. At first glance, it looks like Proto Whey is the cheaper of the two products when worked out by per gram of powder. However, it should be mentioned that Hydro Whey contains far more protein per gram of powder. So to make things fair, we compared the cost of the two products by cost per kilo of actual protein. In this case, for a kilo of protein from Hydro Whey, you can expect to pay around $83, which is not cheap. However, you are looking to pay over $106 for a kilo of protein from Proto Whey.

Winner: Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydro Whey

Hydro Whey Vs Protein Whey Overall Winner

Proto Whey wins for ingredients, effectiveness, and taste, while Hydro Whey takes out dosing and price. This means that the overall winner is Proto Whey with a score of 3 to 2.

Overall Winner: BNRG - If you want something that is better value for money, then Hydro Whey is the good bet. However, if you want the superior protein powder, BNRG Proto Whey, despite its low protein content, is hard to beat thanks to its ridiculously high di- and tri-peptide content.

Although we try to be as objective as possible, we understand that opinions can vary between individuals. As such, the results of this comparison may not be agreed upon by everyone and should only be used as a guide.
