Hydroxycut has long been one of the foremost names of fat loss supplements for the best part of a decade now. Originally created by Muscletech Research and Development and later sold to Iovate Health Sciences, Hydroxycut has built a strong reputation as being one of the most effective and versatile fat loss supplements in the industry. Most of their original products were capsulated products, however, they’ve slowly diversified their range with a range of gummies, shakes and even sprinkles (a powdered mix for your savoury foods). One of Hydroxycut’s latest offerings is their protein bar, known as Hydroxycut Lean Protein Bars.
Hydroxycut Lean Protein Bars are your average high protein, low carb bars which feature Green Coffee Bean Extract as its core fat loss ingredient. Some highlights of the bar include:
Each 48g bar provides on average 190 calories with 18g of protein, 19g of carbohydrates, 7g of fat (5g of which are saturated) and 200mg of the fat loss ingredient Green Coffee Bean Extract.
Protein bars are an excellent way to support fat and weight loss. Higher protein diets are well known to be more satiating/filling and people on higher protein diets tend to have better body compositions (higher lean muscle mass and lower fat mass), thanks to the anabolic, muscle building properties of protein. The protein sources of Hydroxycut Lean Protein Bars have a medium absorption spectrum, helping to supply amino acids to our muscles over a longer period of time. The bar is also low in calories and provides an ideal sweet snack solution for those who find themselves turning to chocolates or other sweet treats during the day. While some people may have issues with sugar alcohols such as maltitol used in Hydroxycut Lean Protein Bars, they are generally recognised as safe ingredients, provide half the calories of regular carbohydrates, do not cause tooth decay and have a lesser effect on blood glucose. Less fluctuations in blood sugar prevent increases in hunger – another factor assisting in weight and fat loss. The bar also contains Green Coffee Bean Extract, an increasingly popular fat loss ingredient.
While Hydroxycut Lean Protein Bars provide plenty of protein, it would be nice to see them use better protein sources such as more whey proteins, casein proteins or even milk proteins, which are considered more bioavailable than soy proteins. The bars could also utilise more unsaturated fats, which are generally considered healthier than saturated fats. Coconut oil however has been recently shown to be a healthier saturated fat than most others and may even exert minor anti-obesity effects. While Green Coffee Bean Extract has been shown to support weight and fat loss, 200mg per bar is really not enough to justify it’s inclusion unless one is planning to eat at least 2 bars a day or is also consuming a fat burner on the side.
The Hydroxycut Lean Protein Bars are currently available in two flavours; Chocolate Peanut Butter Caramel and Chocolate Fudge. While both are excellent flavours in their own right, Chocolate Peanut Butter Caramel is a bolder and much more complex flavour option and will definitely please the peanut butter lovers. Chocolate Fudge is nice but is rather ordinary, especially if you’re used to chocolate protein shakes. Having said that though, one could easily be happy with either option and neither of them have that protein-y taste that can render a bar almost inedible.
Hydroxycut Lean Protein Bars are an ideal high protein snack for people who are looking to lose weight and fat but want something different, more convenient and more filling than the usual protein shake. While it is quite high in fat, it’s not that out of place compared with many other protein bars and although 200mg of Green Coffee Bean Extract is slightly underdosed, the Lean Protein Bars actually provide more of the fat loss ingredient than most other fat loss protein bars. Overall Hydroxycut have made another convenient supplement for those who want a simpler way to lose weight.
