Cortisol
Cortisol is a corticosteroid hormone that is produced by the adrenal gland. Often referred to as the ‘stress hormone’ it plays a role in helping our body respond to stress, especially in ‘fight or flight’ mode. It is important for the body to have the right levels of Cortisol, because too little or too much can have a detrimental effect on a wide range of functions in the body.
Overall, Cortisol plays an important role in glucose metabolism, blood pressure regulation, inflammatory responses, immune function and insulin levels. It is found in the highest concentration in the morning, and is usually at low levels in the night. The body can also secret Cortisol into the body to create a short burst of Energy, increase pain threshold, heighten memory function and plays an important role in returning the body to a state of homeostasis.
However, for some people, too much Cortisol can have the effect of being at a heightened state of stress all the time, not allowing the body to enter moments of relaxation. This can have a detrimental effect on blood pressure, as well as having a negative impact on cognitive function, thyroid function, lowered immunity and increased inflammatory responses. It can also have a disruptive influence on blood sugar levels and lead to hyperglycaemia. For people undertaking a serious workout regime, too much Cortisol can derail the best-laid plans, decreasing bone density and muscle tissue.
Too much Cortisol can also play a significant role in increasing abdominal fat. As lifting weights can stress the body and nervous system, Cortisol levels will increase, thus resulting in increased body fat levels. This type of fatty deposit is especially dangerous to health, and has been associated with the onset of strokes, increased LDL (bad) cholesterol, lowered HDL (good) cholesterol and heart attacks.
Cortisol levels vary from person to person, but if you are highly-strung or easily stressed, chances are you are secreting too much. People who secrete larger amounts of Cortisol also tend to eat more, creating a bad cycle within the body. There are a number of ways to reduce Cortisol in the body if you believe you may be tipping the Cortisol scales. Firstly, there are ways for your doctor to test for over or under secretion of Cortisol. This is important to do because it can lead to other health disorders, such as Cushing’s syndrome (if it’s too high) or Addison’s disease (if it’s too low). If Cortisol levels are too high, but not dangerously so, learning to manage stress is the best way to reduce the hormone’s secretion. For bodybuilders though who are in high volume or high intensity period of their Training Cycle a supplement to keep Cortisol levels in check can be extremely beneficial.
A healthy, well balanced and stress free lifestyle with regular exercise is the key to regulating Cortisol. If you feel high Cortisol may be a medical problem for you, ask your health care professional before taking supplements. Special care needs to be taken if you are pregnant or lactating, under 16 or not part of a regular Exercise Program.
