Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)
Whey Protein Concentrate, commonly referred to as “WPC”, is a form of Protein Supplement popular with bodybuilders, athletes and everyday people world-wide. Designed to build, strengthen and repair muscles.
Protein can be found naturally in meats such as chicken, beef and fish, as well as dairy products such as milk, cheese and eggs (particularly Egg Whites). However, anyone regularly participating in an Exercise Regime can benefit from supplementation.
Whey Protein Concentrate is of a similar structure to Whey Protein Isolate, except its purity and Biological Value (BV) are not as high. Whey Protein Isolate is the purest form of Protein available, with a maximum BV of 157. Whey Protein Concentrate has a maximum BV of 104, which is not as high, but still works effectively as a muscle building supplement. Considering Meat Protein has a BV of 80, Whey Protein Concentrate ranks very high on the protein biological value scale.
Despite being less pure than Whey Protein Isolate, there is actually not alot of scienticic evidence available showing Whey Protein Concentrate is dramaticaly less effective as a bodybuilding supplement. WPC does, however, contain higher levels of fat, lactose and cholesterol as a result of its lower Protein percentage. Whey Protein Concentrate typically contains between 50% and 80% Protein, whilst Whey Protein Isolate contains generally 87% plus.
The most notable benefit firstly of using Whey Protein Concentrate over Whey Protein Isolate is that is digests slower due to the additional fats, cholesterol & lactose. WPC there for can be very beneficial as an all purpose or Night Time Protein, continually "drip-feeding" your muscles with vital nutrients & Amino Acids over a period of hours. Secondly it's value for money is second to none as a Bodybuilding Protein. Essentially, you’re paying a much lower cost per gram or serve for a product that does in most cases a very very acceptable job. Put simply, WPC is regarded as the best protein type for bodybuilding whilst remaining at the lowest price.
Whey Protein Concentrate is a great supplement option for people on beginner or intermediate resistance training levels. It is also the prime ingredient in many women’s toning and muscle strengthening Protein products. Whey Protein Concentrate can be quite easily integrated into everyday diets, whether as a shake, mixed with juice or sprinkled on top of cereal. WPC is commonly taken as an all day, post-training or night time protein supplement.
