Benefits of Forskolin
Forskolin is a chemical that is found in the roots of the Coleus plant, a plant that has been used for thousands of years in Indian Ayurvedic medicine. Traditionally, forskolin was used to treat a variety of respiratory, cardiac and skin complaints, but recent research has shown that this botanical extract has promise as a weight loss aid. For this reason, forskolin is commonly included in fat burner supplements. We also know that it is an antioxidant and has some effect against microorganisms.
Many of the effects that forskolin exerts are due to its ability to raise cellular levels of a chemical called cyclic AMP, or cAMP. cAMP acts as a cellular messenger, and it plays a very important role in many aspects of cell function and metabolism, including the way our bodies use and store energy, respond to hormones and in regulation of things like blood pressure.
One of the proteins cAMP activates is called Protein kinase A, an enzyme that has many functions. One of these is controlling the rate of lipolysis, or the breakdown of fat. Higher levels of active protein kinase A means fat is broken down faster. There has been research showing that regular use of forskolin increases the proportion of lean mass and reduces the proportion of fat in the body.
On top of this, protein kinase A promotes smooth muscle relaxation through a number of pathways. This means that it may be effective as a pump enhancer, because it relaxes the blood vessels. There has also been research showing regular use of forskolin may boost testosterone levels in men.
How to take Forskolin
Interestingly, forskolin can be administered by many methods. In the ayurvedic tradition it is inhaled to treat lung complaints, and when doctors use forskolin to treat heart failure, they administer it intravenously. Thankfully, the best way to take forskolin for fat loss is by mouth. Forskolin is available as a stand alone supplement, but it is more commonly found together with other fat loss ingredients in a formulated fat burner supplement.
There has not been a huge amount of research into the optimal dose of forskolin, but 250mg of an extract containing 10% forskolin, twice a day, (providing a total daily dosage of 50mg) is generally accepted as standard for weight loss and increasing testosterone levels.
Best time to take Forskolin
Most people recommend splitting the daily forskolin dose into two. These two doses are generally taken morning and night. Absorption is thought to be greatest when forskolin is taken on an empty stomach, and it is common to take each dose half an hour before a meal. It is also common to take forskolin half an hour before a workout.
