Fans of Optimum Nutrition would immediately be familiar with their budget friendly “Performance” line of supplements, featuring products such as Performance Whey. Recently, Optimum have quietly made a new addition to this series with the release of Optimum Performance Energy, a caffeinated amino acid supplement which can be used as a pre workout. In essence, it is a simplified version of their already popular Amino Energy supplement.
Optimum Performance Energy Highlights
- Simple clean energy boost
- Contains amino blend to help with muscle building and recovery
- Peerless flavour and mixability
- Superior value compared to Amino Energy
Optimum Performance Energy Ingredients & Dosing
Performance Energy shares many ingredients in common with its Amino Energy sibling. However, it does lack some of the fancier ones.
Each 8.5 g scoop provides a 5 g blend of amino acids that include taurine, alanine, leucine, tyrosine, histidine, lysine, phenylalanine, threonine, isoleucine, valine, beta-alanine, citrulline, and methionine. For some extra energy, there is also 100 mg caffeine.
Optimum Performance Energy Effectiveness and Pros
Performance Energy is a simple supplement that gives a mild energy boost while also providing you with a good dose of amino acids to aid muscle building and recovery. Unlike full-blown pre workouts, it can be taken casually, even away from training, simply when you feel like you need a pick me up. It can be used as a healthy alternative to other caffeinated beverages such as sugar loaded energy drinks and colas.
Each scoop provides roughly the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee, making Performance Energy mild enough even for beginners. However, the more experienced trainers can take up to three scoops at a time, which gives a more than respectable 300 mg caffeine.
Optimum Performance Energy Negatives & Cons
The most notable difference between Amino Energy and Performance Energy is that Performance Energy lacks green tea, green coffee, and glutamine. The concentration of other amino acids has also been reshuffled to produce a lower cost product. These costs savings will be passed down to consumers, as seen with other Performance line products.
We hope that the introduction of Performance Energy is to provide a better value for money version of Amino Energy instead of phasing out a classic. This should not be completely unexpected as Performance Whey was introduced as a cost effective form of Gold Standard 100% Whey. Switching out the well formulated Amino Energy for this lower cost alternative would be a shame for fans.
Optimum Performance Energy Taste & Mixability
None of the excellent flavour or mixability has been lost from the original Amino Energy. Using micronized amino acids in this formulation means that mixability is excellent, even if you are using a cup and spoon. Flavour has always been fantastic with Amino Energy, providing a clean, crisp, and delicious taste. This is no different for the new Performance Energy, which shares a very similar flavour profile.
Optimum Performance Energy Verdict
If you are after a simple pre workout supplement or a healthy middle of the day pick me up, Optimum Performance Energy is an excellent product to go for. Although it may not stack up as well as its older brother, its excellent value for money should make it appealing to a wider audience.
