It is no secret that when it comes to protein powders Optimum Nutrition and Dymatize are at each other’s throats, locked in fierce competition. As such, Optimum Nutrition 100% Casein Gold Standard is a direct competitor with Dymatize Elite Casein.
Optimum Nutrition Casein vs Dymatize Casein Ingredients
Although both products makes claims about being 100% micellar casein, a careful look at the label reveals that the Dymatize Casein is actually not all it claims. Dymatize Casein is in fact a protein blend containing micellar casein together with milk protein concentrate. What this means, is that although micellar casein makes up a large proportion of Dymatize Casein, it actually also has a small proportion of whey protein. This is not necessary a bad thing, but it is this review’s opinion that a product claiming to have 100% micellar casein should in fact have only casein as its sole source of protein. However, in favour of Dymatize, it is the only product out of the two to be gluten-free. Although this is not important for most people, it is a nice nod to gluten-intolerant people. In addition to this, both also contain a digestive enzyme blend. Whether or not this is actually needed is up to debate.
Winner: Draw - Optimum Nutrition 100% Casein Gold Standard for being 100% casein, but Dymatize for being gluten-free.
Optimum Nutrition Casein vs Dymatize Casein Dosing
When it comes to dosing, the two products are extremely hard to split. Just have a look at the following chart and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Serving Size (g)
In short, the two products are almost identical and any difference in dosing is completely trivial from a nutritional standpoint.
Optimum Nutrition Casein vs Dymatize Casein Effectiveness
Once again, it is difficult to single out which product is more effective. If you feel you absolutely need a product with casein and only casein, then Optimum Casein is the one to choose. However, if you like the idea of a little bit of whey in the mix, then you would like Dymatize Casein. All in all, both products provide a slow and steady rate of digestion to keep your body anabolic during periods in which you can’t eat (eg. sleep), and are both equally effective.
Optimum Nutrition Casein vs Dymatize Casein Taste, Flavour & Mixability
If anyone has tried casein before, they will immediately know that mixability and texture is not often a strong point for that ingredient. Casein shakes tend to be thicker and rougher than whey protein. This is true for both the Optimum and Dymatize caseins. In Australia, Optimum Casein is available in more flavours, compared to Dymatize Casein (7 vs 4). However, after having tried a few, although the opinions were mixed, we would have to say that the flavour of the Optimum product is slightly superior.
Winner: Optimum Nutrition 100% Casein Gold Standard
Optimum Nutrition Casein vs Dymatize Casein Value
Both products come in identical size tubs and almost identical number of serves per tub. We found that both products are also identical in price for the larger 1.8 Kg tub. However, for the smaller 900 g tub, Dymatize Casein is actually $5 cheaper, therefore providing better value for money.
Winner: Dymatize Elite Casein.
Optimum Nutrition Casein vs Dymatize Casein Overall Winner
It was extremely tough to pick a winner out of these two, as they are remarkably similar. It is so secret that both products were made as close to each other as possible, a reflection of the competition between the brands. We felt that Optimum Casein was a little better in regards to flavour, the Dymatize product was a little cheaper, while all other variables were equal.
Overall winner: Draw – 1 win to each, and 3 draws
