My Supplement Isn’t Working? Why is this so?
This question is one of the most common ones that we get asked with obvious differences in “X” the supplement in question. And with good reason, if you’re going to spend your hard earned cash on one, two or more supplements, you want those supplements to help you achieve your goals. Remember that a supplement is only one part of the equation. Just as you wouldn’t count on any one food to provide you with all the nutrition you require, you cannot expect a particular supplement/s to be the only part necessary to help you achieve your goals.
Get the Most Out of Your Supplements
Remember that to achieve your goals, you need to look more globally about what you are, or aren’t doing. Here is a list of what you should be focusing on before you claim that the supplement isn’t working:
- Training – Are you training enough, not enough or too much?
- Diet & Nutrition – Is your daily intake providing you with enough nutrients? Does your intake match your goals? (eg. decreased intake if you want to lose weight)
- Rest & Recovery – Are you getting enough sleep? Are you recovering sufficiently between training sessions?
Training For Specific Goals
Aside from these issues, your overall genetics may be making it extra difficult to achieve the goals you want. The point here is that, while it may require some extra work on your part, gains are still possible. If you are doing everything right and the supplement still isn’t working for you, then maybe that supplement in question isn’t working for you. Remember that the most important thing when training is individualisation. This is no different when it comes to taking supplements. Something that may work for your friend doesn’t mean it will necessarily work for you. Be sure that you aren’t just putting all you eggs in one basket and relying on a particular supplement for achieving your goals. Always take a global point of view and to address all the other factors affecting your goal.
