Not often do we compare two products from the same parent brand, but in this particular case we think it is worthwhile to compare MusclePharm Combat against Arnold Schwarzenegger Iron Whey, two very popular blended protein powders manufactured by MusclePharm.

Iron Whey vs Combat Ingredients

Despite being by the same company, Combat and Iron Whey are actually quite different from the ingredient front. This of course would make sense from a business perspective as MusclePharm wouldn’t want the Arnold products to cannibalise sales from the parent brand.

The major difference between the two products is that Combat provides a much wider variety of different proteins. Iron Whey is built on a foundation of the three traditional whey proteins (whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate (WPI), and whey protein hydrolysate). The same blend is also present in Combat, but also includes micellar casein and egg white albumen, two slower digesting proteins.

Both products also contain amino acid blends, but it must be said that the blend used in Combat is superior to Iron Whey as it contains only the most anabolic and useful amino acids including glutamine and the three BCAAs.

Winner: MusclePharm Combat – For its better blend of added amino acids.

As you can see from the macro comparison, both products are very similar in their nutrients, and there isn’t enough of a difference to say one is better than the other.

Iron Whey vs Combat Effectiveness

Again, a tough one to call. Both products are quality protein powders that provide the nutrients needed for making lean gains. It really is a matter of personal preference if you prefer a simpler or more comprehensive protein blend, which may be better for beginners. Combat is a more flexible product, while Iron Whey has more of a post workout focus.

Winner: Draw

Iron Whey vs Combat Taste, Flavour, & Mixability

Mixability is excellent for both products and it is not a discriminating factor. What does differ though is the way the two products taste. Iron Whey, thanks to its gums, has a much thicker texture than Combat. Although both products taste great, the added texture of Iron Whey makes it the more delicious protein with the superior milkshake like mouth feel. Although some may disagree, this reviewer personally believes that Iron Whey comes out on top for flavour.

Winner: Arnold Schwarzenegger Iron Whey – For its milkshake texture.

Iron Whey vs Combat Value

Iron Whey and Combat both come in 900 g tubs. At this size, Iron Whey is a few dollars cheaper. This cost saving is magnified at the larger sizes because Iron Whey is available in a 2.3 kg tub, while Combat is only 1.8 kg. Despite the size difference, both tubs are similarly priced, making Iron Whey the better value for money protein powder.

Winner: Arnold Schwarzenegger Iron Whey

Iron Whey vs Combat Value Overall Winner

Combat is the winner for ingredients used, but Iron Whey is the winner for taste and value. For effectiveness and dosing, both products are equally good. Considering all these factors, it must be said that Iron Whey is the winner of this comparison by 2 points to 1.

Winner: Arnold Schwarzenegger Iron Whey
