Tension and anxiety can prevent bodybuilders from preforming at their best during training and competitions. The following techniques can help you release tension and stay calm in high pressure situations:
Slow Down - Anxiety can cause you to speed up your behaviour and negativly affecting your preformance. When you start to feel anxious, try to slow down the pace of your routine. Be deliberate but try not to over-analyse the situation.
Breathe Deeply - Deep breathing is an excellent way to reduce muscle tension and focus on something positive. Breath deeply through your abdominal cavity or stomach to reduce physical tension and help cleat your mind.
Release Tension - Contracting a tense muscle and then releasing it has a relaxing effect. It is often easier to relax a tight muscle when your fully contract it and then release the tension.
Talk to Yourself - Anxiety increases when self-talk is nagative and self defeating. Be aware when your self-talk becomes negative and try using positive phrases to help regain self-confidence. Your inner self is your best coach, so make sure to give yourself lots of encouragement.
Use The Advantage - An increase of adrenaline that accompanies excitment or fear can give you an extra boost of energy to concentrate better and improve preformance. However too much adrenaline can lead to over stimulation which can lead to lapses in concentration and judgement.
