Grenade is a British company that has recently taken Europe by storm. With their creative packaging and high intensity ingredients, it’s no wonder that they’re also steadily making a name for themselves on the world market. Us in Australia have been lucky enough to have access to .50 Calibre, Grenade’s very own concentrated pre workout supplement.
What is Grenade .50 Calibre?
Those familiar with firearms and shooter games will know that .50 Calibre (pronounced fifty calibre, no need to say the decimal point) has been named after one of the most deadly forms of ammunition used in the most powerful sniper rifles and machine guns. This gives you a hint as to what the .50 Calibre pre workout is designed to do. The manufacturers say it’s a hard hitting pre workout for explosive energy, strength, and pumps.
Grenade .50 Calibre First Impressions
The first thing you notice about .50 Cal is its highly original and unique packaging. It comes in a military-esque ammo box that that contains a matching ziplock pack of powder and scoop. The texture of the powder is also not quite what you would expect from a pre workout, and looks almost like an oddly coloured protein powder.
It can be left to debate as to whether .50 Cal is actually a concentrated pre workout, or just a regular pre workout. The maximum dose is 23.2 g, which is very large for a concentrated pre workout, and it also contains ingredients such as BCAAs, and is even relatively high in carbs (21.6%) compared to other concentrated pre workouts. However, what it does share with other pre workouts is its potent amount of stimulants and energisers (up to 550 mg caffeine with a max serve). With doses like that, even stimulant resistant people will be finding it to be a strong formula. Despite the high caffeine content, the energy provided is very clean. The stimulant effects wear off gradually, and you are unlikely to experience much of a crash.
Of Particular Interest
.50 Calibre contains quite a number of excellent pre workout ingredients. Grenade has not tried hard to be different with their ingredients for the sake of being different. Rather, they have combined tried and tested ingredients such as creatine monohydrate, beta-alanine, citrulline malate, and the recently popularised beetroot extract in extremely generous and effective doses. These help to increase strength, stamina, and pump. What this means is that you can expect some pretty good pumps and energy when using .50 Cal.
With such concentrated ingredients, it’s even more important to make sure that the product undergoes strict quality control. I am glad to report that .50 Cal is manufactured and packaged according to internationally recognised ISO9001 quality assurance standards and facilities that comply with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices).
Grenade .50 Calibre Difference from the Competition
Grenade has been extremely transparent with their labelling. They list the quantity of each active ingredient on a per serve basis, so you know exactly what you are getting. As mentioned above, the types of ingredients used in .50 Cal are not revolutionary, but the concentrations certainly are. There are very few filler ingredients and the only reason why the serving size is relatively large, is because you are getting a lot of actives.
Let’s also not forget the obvious. The most standout factor about .50 is its packaging. It’s safe to say that nothing else stands out quite as much as a box of .50 Cal sitting on the shelf. The fact that it also happens to work well is definitely a plus too.
Grenade .50 Calibre Taste & Mixability
.50 Calibre is a pretty serious pre workout and Grenade have really focused hard on performance. As such, compared to some other pre workouts, .50 Calibre does not mix as well. When added to the recommended amount of water, there is comparatively more sediment, possibly as a result of the huge concentration of active ingredients. The flavour of .50 Cal has received mixed reviews because of its bitter taste. The bitterness is actually from the high doses of theobromine, the compound that gives dark chocolate its distinctive bitter taste. Dark Chocolate is of course an acquired taste. So if you’re a dark chocolate fan, you may like .50 Cal more than others.
Grenade .50 Calibre Negatives
As a way to improve your performance, .50 Cal is solid and hard to fault. It most certainly is only for the most serious athletes and bodybuilders, and may be a little too strong for first time users of pre workouts. The high caffeine dose may cause heart palpitations, anxiety, and disturbed sleep in those who are sensitive. Be sure to start off with a lower dose when first trying .50 Cal.
Those who are serious about their training would not be too fussed about taste and mixability, but this is a category that .50 Cal falls a little short of compared to other pre workouts. Perhaps using a finer powder would allow for improved mixability.
Who is Grenade .50 Calibre for?
Grenade .50 Calibre is certainly one of the more serious pre workout supplements. It is highly recommended for the more experienced trainer and users of pre workout supplements, and perhaps even those who typically find that pre workouts don’t work. Although the product is relatively high in carbs, it is still only 25 to 50 calories per serve (depending on serving size), which makes it suitable for every phase of your training.
