Very few bodybuilding companies carry a carbohydrate product, probably because half the population seems to think that carbs are the devil’s work. However, the truth is, carbohydrates are necessary in order to get the best out of a workout, as well as for replenishing muscle glycogen so you can train harder and recover faster. Gaspari Nutrition were clever enough to realise that simply following trends set by the average person wasn’t good enough. Instead, they have decided to target the really serious and knowledgeable bodybuilders and athletes with Glycofuse, an advanced carbohydrate and electrolyte supplement that is a truly unique and ground breaking.
Glycofuse is an advanced, relatively unique, yet simple carbohydrate supplement for the serious athlete. It is made up primarily of highly branched cyclic dextrins, which are a complex carbohydrate with an extremely low osmolarity, fast gut transit time, yet slow digesting profile for sustained energy delivery (Takii et al, 1999). In addition to this, there is also an electrolyte blend consisting of calcium, magnesium, and sodium.
Glycofuse is best used as a carbohydrate supplement for carbo loading before training. This ensures maximum glycogen levels for a bout of intense or extended training, which can improve performance and the quality of the workout. Because of the extremely rapid gut transit time, it is less likely to cause stomach upsets and bloating compared to other forms of carbohydrates (Takii et al, 2004). Glycofuse is also excellent for a DIY weight gainer. By adding Glycofuse to an existing protein powder, such as Gaspari Myofusion, you are able to build yourself a non-bloating, yet calorie and carbohydrate rich shake that can really help to pack on the muscle.
A low carb diet may help you lose weight and could have a place in training, but you don’t win trophies by sticking to low carb foods indefinitely. This is where a product like Glycofuse comes in. Cyclic dextrins are not new to science. However, Glycofuse is one of the few products currently on the market that has used them in its formulation. This innovation is what sets Gaspari apart from many other companies. Not only that, but cyclic dextrins are more than just a gimmick, as they do have a legitimate application to enhancing performance.
The rapid gut clearance of Glycofuse is very good news for those who need large amounts of carbs, especially before training. There’s nothing worse than feeling bloated during a workout, but this is not an issue with Glycofuse.
Glycofuse is a very versatile supplement. It is suitable for pretty much any time that you require a slow burning carbohydrate to provide sustained energy. This gradual energy release means no large insulin spikes and no sugar crashes.
Gaspari advertises Glycofuse as a product suitable for pre, intra, and post workout. Although it definitely has merits has a method of carbo loading before a workout, this reviewer would argue against using it during a workout. Yes, Glycofuse has a fast stomach clearance time, but it is still a slow digesting complex carb. This means that unless you are an endurance athlete, your exercise sessions will simply not be long enough for you to experience the benefits of the cyclic dextrins. If you were after a fast clearing, fast absorbing carbohydrate supplement, Genr8 Vitargo S2 would be more suitable.
Another potential downside is that Glycofuse is a relatively expensive carbohydrate product. There are certainly cheaper sources of carbohydrates that do a similar job, such as waxy maize starch, but none can boast the superior benefits of the cyclic dextrin in Glycofuse. To this reviewer’s knowledge, there is only one other product on the market that uses cyclic dextrins in its formulation. The competitor’s product is cheaper. However, unlike Glycofuse, it is not 100% cyclic dextrin.
Glycofuse Taste & Mixability
Glycofuse dissolves easily in water, so there is never an issue with poor mixability or clumping. The flavour is excellent, and tastes similar to mainstream electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade, as a result of the sodium. It is currently only available in two flavours, orange mango and strawberry kiwi. Although both flavours are pleasant, the latter is such a unique treat, and it would be the pick of the two.
Gaspari Glycofuse is a highly specialised carbohydrate supplement that would be excellent for carbo loading and to make your own weight gainer powder. The days of bloating carbs are gone and if you demand the best fast clearing, slow digesting carb, Glycofuse cannot be beat. Just be warned that you will be paying a premium for this level of quality. For the truly hardcore, combining this product with Vitargo will give the ultimate carbohydrate combination that will make all other carb sources obsolete and redundant.
