This article explores why you should eat ‘clean calories’ (i.e. healthy, beneficial foods), as opposed to junk foods, otherwise known as ‘dirty calories' whilst training.

Benefits of Clean Foods For Bodybuilders

Clean foods contain an abundance of healthy constituents, including vitamins, minerals and key antioxidants, that will help keep you healthy and provide your body with what it needs to grow and stay lean. For example sweet potato will give you vitamins, fibre and carbs that will be slowly digested, preventing an insulin spike giving you sustained energy with no crash. Its dirty counterpart would give you saturated fat, insulin spiking carbs, and add unwanted fat to your body. Rather than butter, use healthy fats like avocado, almonds, olive oil and nut butters as opposed to lard and bacon.

Eat Clean For Lean Muscle

While we may be wanting to gain weight, we want to gain that weight as lean mass rather than fat. Eating junk will ensure you gain fat, not muscle. Measure your food and eat controlled calories to gain lean mass rather than fat. If you do it this way, you won’t have to go on an extreme diet where you’d lose hard earned muscle. A slow bulk, whilst monitoring body fat gains is the best way to go. Eating clean is the way to go. This way, you can stay lean, harder, sexier and show more quality bulk, longer.

Can I Have a Cheat Meal?

Yes, occasionally cheat meals can fit in with clean bulking. Just ensure that you keep your cheat foods to that specific cheat meal. For the rest of the time, eat clean.

For Lean Muscle Gains Eat Clean

The more fat you add whilst adding muscle, the more you will have to strip off later. With this, comes the expense of losing some of that hard earned muscle in the cutting process. By eating cleaner through the year, you can be better positioned to see your progress, and will look better, longer. Don’t feel short changed though, as you can save ‘dirty’ type foods for your scheduled cheat meal.
