Dymatize Nutrition Xpand 2x Review
Dymatize Nutrition Xpand 2x is one of the most exciting new pre-workout products to hit the market in 2012. Xpand 2x replaces Dymatizes’s original Xpand, which in its own right was a very successful product.
Innovation In Every Way
With just a brief glance over the new ingredients panel for Xpand 2x, it quickly becomes apparent that Dymatize have gone to great lengths to make this pre-workout one of the most unique and innovative on the market. Xpand 2x contains a number of new nutrients and botanicals as well as unique forms of certain nutrients and amino acids with enhanced delivery systems.
Xpand 2x contains 5 different nutrient/ingredient complexes in addition to vitamin C and b-vitamins. The first blend called MYO-XPAND contains micronized pure creatine monohydrate, beta-alanine and creatinol-O-phosphate. Out of these three nutrients, creatinol-O-phosphate is the one that stands out from the crowd. Creatinol-O-phosphate is a nutrient that has been around for a long time, with most of the research on it undertaken in the late 1970’s. While the exact mechanism by which it works is not fully known, it has been shown to support optimal heart and mitochondrial function.
The next complex is named ENDURO-XPAND, which contains branched-chain amino acids, l-taurine and alanyl-glutamine. The branched chain amino acids come in the form of CHAIN-SOL, which is a proprietary 2:1:1 water-soluble blend. This special blend helps the product to mix better so as to avoid excessive sedimentation. Alanyl-glutamine is a superior form of glutamine that has some great research to back its superior stability to normal l-glutamine.
FOCUS-XPAND as the name suggests is a complex of nutrients designed to enhance mental focus and drive. The potent mix contains n-acetyl tyrosine, glucuronolactone, caffeine and rhodiola rosea. With a single 10g dose, you get 125mg of caffeine, making it a very potent blend, especially when taking 2 or 3 serves as recommended for advanced users with high tolerance.
The next blend on the list if one of the most exciting. Named the VASO-XPAND – Muscle Pump Matrix, it contains agmatine sulphate, NITRO2GRANITTM – a pomegranate extract standardised to 50% polyphenols, beet root extract , ascorbic acid and AssuriTEATM Green Tea Extract. As you can see, this is not your run of the mill vasodilation mix. Aside from the inclusion of some exciting herbal extracts, its also what’s not included in the mix that’s important. The exclusion of arginine and/or arginine alpha-ketoglutarate is notable and reflects a swinging trend that’s in keeping with the latest research on arginine and AAKG, which shows they don’t seem to have any beneficial effects on performance and may even reduce exercise performance. The inclusion of beet root extract is worthy of note as multiple independent studies show it is beneficial for increasing blood flow and high-intensity exercise performance.
Last but not least is the QRS-Complex containing quercetin-O-rutinoside (rutin) and quercetin dehydrate. The inclusion of these phytonutrients is a refreshing and timely change. For a number of years now, quercetin has been shown to have beneficial on exercise performance, especially endurance. It acts as a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Rutin is a derivative of quercetin and works synergistically with it to complement it beneficial effects.
Flavours, Taste and Mixability
With 5 different complexes in the one formula and such a diverse range of ingredients, one might expect Xpand2x to contain a significant amount of sugar or maltodextrin to make the taste and mixability of the product acceptable. However, Dymatize have done exceptionally well to keep added excipients like maltodextrin, acids, flavours and sweeteners to a minimum, while keeping the flavour more than acceptable. Flavour wise, Xpand 2x comes in four flavours; fruit punch, red raspberry, mandarin orange and watermelon. I had the chance to try the red raspberry flavour. Personally I found it reasonably palatable, but could not honestly say I relished or loved it. But that’s not to say I would dread taking it each day. Mixability wise, Xpand 2x mixed up very easily with a few gentle stir’s of the teaspoon. Xpand 2x doesn’t even require the use of a shaker to achieve a good mix when just using water.
The Best Researched Pre-Workout
With such an exciting and diverse range of ingredients, Dymatize claim that Xpand 2x is the single most research-backed pre-performance product they have ever developed. While this sounds like an all too familiar catch cry, after a careful review and trial of the product, I’m inclined to believe them. If your growing a bit tired of copy-cat type pre-workout products on the market, Xpand 2x is offers a great refreshing alternative. With a plethora of researched backed nutrients, botanicals and amino acids, Xpand 2x shapes as a potential market leading pre-workout.
