Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. It is one of the major building blocks of bones, skins, muscle, hair, tendons and ligaments. It is essential the "glue" that holds everything together. In fact, the word collagen actually comes from the Greek word "kolla" which actually translates to glue. Although there are 16 types of different collagen, there are four main types, which are categorised into type I, II, III and IV.

  • Type I is 90% of your body's collagen. It provides structure to skin, bones, hair, nails and connective tissue.
  • Type II is found in elastic cartridge which cushions your joints.
  • Type III supports the structure of muscles, organs and arteries.
  • Finally, type IV is found in the layers of your skin.

Collagen lessens and weakens with age, most visibly noticeable in our skin where it begins to appear less firm and supple. Supplementing with collagen has been shown to lessen the visual effects of ageing on the skin, Other benefits include strengthening of connective tissue between joints lessening the chances of injuries and aiding in the recovery of tendons post-injury (eg ACL or shoulder injuries.)
