What are Chewable Multivitamins?
Chewable multivitamins are similar in constituency to regular multivitamins that come in tablet or capsule form, but are made to resemble gummy candies in taste and appearance. More commonly made in children formulations, they are becoming increasingly popular for adults too.
Where do Chewable Multivitamins Come From?
Chewable multivitamins are generally made by pharmaceutical companies from a mixture of natural and man-made sources. Their production is regulated by the TGA.
Benefits of Chewable Multivitamins
The main benefits of taking a multivitamin in chewable form is that it increases compliance. In other words, it makes sure that people will take the vitamin. Taking regular multivitamins can come as a chore to some people, and can be associated with a bad taste or texture as well as the unpleasantness of swallowing a pill. Making sure that the vitamin is actually taken means that the benefits are being achieved, rather than sitting in the bottle. Regular taking of the vitamin is also important, rather than a stop and start approach, since it takes two weeks before any kind of supplementation's benefits will be seen.
Benefits of Chewable Multivitamins for Bodybuilding
With many bodybuilders taking so many other supplements in capsule or powder form and not always with the best flavour, chewing a pleasant tasting gummy vitamin may come as something of a relief. It's an easy and convenient way to ensure that you are getting your recommended daily dose of all the vitamins and minerals your body needs, without adding yet another tablet to the list.
Side Effects, Negatives & Safety of Chewable Multivitamins
There are often lower levels of certain vitamins in chewable multivitamins as opposed to regular tablets or capsule. This is mostly for taste reasons – the strong bitter taste of some can be hard to mask, and would counteract the point of making a chewable version in the first place. The nutrients left out completely are generally only needed in trace amounts, and most people eating a fairly normal diet would acquire adequate amounts of them anyway. They can include selenium and vitamin K, as well as thiamin, magnesium, copper, manganese and chromium. If you have particular dietary requirements or metabolic diseases this would be something to look into.
The absorption of the vitamins in gummy form is also altered. Breakdown begins immediately with enzymes in the mouth, and so they are absorbed quickly from the gastrointestinal system. Although this may seem like a positive, and many people buy capsule form vitamins for the same reason, in actuality it may decrease the benefits. If the vitamins are absorbed quickly it is likely your body will reach its maximum levels quickly, and will simply excrete the rest in the urine. If absorption is slower it gives the body a chance to utilise more. There is a higher amount of sugar in chewable multivitamins than in regular, with up to 4g per gummy in some brands. If you are on a low calorie or carb diet this may be something to take into consideration, as well as for dental health purposes.
Chewable Multivitamines Recommended Doses & Ingredient Timing
Chewable multivitamins come in ready-formulated doses, meaning you can simply take one or two gummies a day. It is generally recommended to take multivitamins with a meal to increase absorption, as well as spacing the doses apart if possible.
Chewable Multivitamin Supplements
Chewable multivitamins come as stand alone formulations. However there are many different brands and flavours, so it is worth trying a few until you find one that you like. The ingredient dosages can be slightly different between brands as well. See our 'choosing the best multivitamin' page for more information.
Stacking Chewable Multivitamins
Chewable multivitamins can be stacked with any other supplements and herbal products designed for general health.
