Cellucor C4 vs Cellucor C4 50x

Quick Summary Guide

  • In terms of ingredients, C4 50x has 50% more of the key active ingredients than the regular C4 GEN4.
  • C4 50x has one extra ingredient over the regular C4. This ingredient is known as XCELICORTM, which is a caffeine, pterostilbene co crystal which helps to prolong and amplify its effects.
  • In terms of effects, if you find yourself needing something a bit stronger as you've become accustomed to the effects of regular C4, then C4 50x is the ideal option.
  • Flavour wise, they're both very similar with the 50x just a little bit more bitter due to the increase in stimulants. Both powders mix extremely easily with minimal residue.
  • If you're a seasoned consumer of pre workouts, then C4 50x will be the best choice for you. If you take pre workouts every so often, C4 might be a better choice thanks to its plentiful flavours and smaller size option.

Cellucor C4 GEN4 vs Cellucor C4 50x Ingredients

As specified on the front label, C4 50x only differs by virtue of one additional active ingredient, namely XCELICORTM. What is XCELICORTM you ask? It’s the brand name for a patented form of caffeine called caffeine pterostilbene cocrystal. Simply put, XCELICORTM is a slow-release or sustained-release form of caffeine. Caffeine in the form of XCELICORTM it is released into the blood stream more slowly but it also hangs around in the body longer.

On a practical level, this means users don’t get the same initial intensity of hit from caffeine, but the arousal effect lasts for longer and there is less of a ‘come down’ or ‘crash’. So in essence, the C4 50x might appeal to those who are more sensitive to the arousal and/or come down effect of normal caffeine. When using caffeine in the XCELICORTM form, it is expected that users will experience a more graduated and steady arousal effect, rather than a sharp increase and subsequent drop.

Cellucor C4 GEN4 vs Cellucor C4 50x Dosing

The most simplistic way to explain the difference in ingredient dosing between the C4 and C4 50x is that C4 50x contains 50% more of the active ingredients. Note that it does NOT contain 50 x the amount of active ingredients in C4, which is the impression the name gives. This is most clearly seen when comparing the relative amount of ingredients side-by-side as in the table below. For some reason Cellucor chose to make folate and vitamin B12 an exception to the rule, by providing well over 50% more in each dose of C4 50x.

C4 50x

Creatine Nitrate (NO3-TTM)

Arginine AKG

Explosive Energy Blend

Vitamin C

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B12

Additionally, as seen in the table below, the key ingredient difference lies in the composition of the proprietary Explosive Energy Blend. C4 50x comes with the added sustained-release form of caffeine (i.e., XCELICORTM). It’s also important to note that it includes normal caffeine anhydrous, so users still get a small quick hit of caffeine.

Cellucor C4 50x - Mrsupplement Article Cellucor C4 GEN4 vs Cellucor C4 50x Effectiveness

Because C4 50x contains 50% more active ingredients, users can expect it to be more effective than C4 on a dose-for-dose basis. But it’s important to realise that C4 50x comes with a 9g dose compared to the 6.5g dose for C4. So in essence, one could simply take 1.5 scoops of C4 and they would be getting very similar amounts of active ingredients to a standard dose of C4 50x. However, this is offset by the fact that C4 50x commands a higher price than C4.

Another key question is whether the added active XCELICORTM makes a noticeable difference to C4 50x effectiveness. Sadly the answer to this question is largely subjective as it depends on an individual’s tolerance and habituation to caffeine. If you are the type of gym goer who takes pre workout sporadically, then you are unlikely to have habituated to caffeine and other popular active pre workout ingredients in which case, taking a full dose of C4 50x may be too much for you.

However, for the die-hard pre workout lover, C4 50x is an ideal choice to provide that added punch or kick.

Cellucor C4 GEN4 vs Cellucor C4 50x Taste, Flavour, Mixability

Even though they differ only in one key active ingredient, there is a notable difference in taste to the discerning palate. C4 50x has a slightly bitter note compared with the same flavour in C4. Aside from that, they both mix well but users only have two choices of flavours (i.e. Icy Blue Razz and Fruit Punch) when it comes to C4 50x compared with six for C4.

Cellucor C4 GEN4 vs Cellucor C4 50x Price & Value

Price is always a key variable influencing people’s supplement choices, and with C4 50x coming in considerably more expensive than C4 60-serve (on a price per serve basis), the price and value of C4 50x could be a barrier for some. Having said that though, people will naturally expect to pay more for a supplement that comes with a bigger serving size and an extra ingredient.

Cellucor C4 GEN4 vs Cellucor C4 50x Verdict

As touched on above, the particular C4 best suited to you will probably depend on the type of pre workout user you are. If you can’t go without your habitual pre workout, then trying the C4 50x would be a good option as you get a higher dose and a prolonged caffeine effect. However, if you only use a pre workout now and then, C4 would probably be the best option, given its option of smaller pack size, more flavours and cheaper price.
