What Are Prohormones?

A Pro-hormone is a substance once known as legal steroids and were used as a pre cursor to a real human growth hormones. Pepitide hormones work by converting itself from a prohormone to an actual human hormone which occurs after export to the endoplasmic reticulum and often requires multiple processing enzymes. For the smaller molecule hormones, the conversion is often done in a single step by regulating hormonal levels in the human body. Before the establishment of tougher legislation, which banned prohormones in Australia, prohormones were used by athletes and bodybuilders to increase muscle growth, boost athletic performances, reduce recovery time, lose excess body fat and even grow taller with the intention of providing the same benefits as anabolic steroids, which are also banned.

Why Were Prohormones Banned?

Prohormones were previously classified as dietary supplements as they contained compounds that already existed in the human body. More recent laws have placed them on the list of prohibited drugs as they are similarly identified with anabolic steroids. Prohormonal steroid compounds were added to the list of substances that are legally defined as ‘anabolic steroids’ and classified as controlled substances. Possession of any of these products forms is a basis for arrest and prosecution. Examples of these prohormones include androstanediol, androstanedione and androstenedione.
