Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound and antioxidant with anti-estrogenic properties found predominantly in grapes and red wine, as well as blueberries and peanuts. Its many benefits include anti-ageing, cardiovascular health, lowering of cholesterol, prevention of blood clots and the protection of the kidneys and pancreas. It is also currently being used in many scientific cancer prevention studies.
The presence of resveratrol in red wine has long been explained as the reason for the ‘French Paradox’ – a study conducted to determine the reason for the low occurrence of heart disease in France. The results revealed that the daily consumption of red wine common in France protected people from heart disease. Further studies conducted on mice have shown that mice being fed resveratrol live for 10% to 20% longer than mice with no resveratrol in their diets.
Resveratrol’s benefits do not end here – it has become extremely popular amongst athletes and bodybuilders for its endurance increasing and anti-estrogenic qualities. Studies have shown that mice with resveratrol in their diets experienced increased treadmill endurance. The good news is that red wine does not have to be consumed in copious amounts to reap the rewards. Resveratrol supplements are available mostly in capsule or tablet form.
Resveratrol is an anti-estrogen product, which means the unproductive effects of estrogen such as body fat increase can be countered & lowered when supplementing resveratrol. This effect will cause good testosterone levels to rise, thus leading to muscle growth & increased strength, as well as fat loss.
Daily dosages may vary between brands, but it is generally thought to be more effective to take resveratrol once a day, rather than spreading dosages out throughout the day.
